There was a huge law enforcement presence in the Amhurst Oaks area of Callahan last Thursday as Nassau County sheriff’s deputies combed the streets and went door to door.
They weren’t in the neighborhood because something bad happened, but to connect with residents during the first Nassau County Sheriff’s Office community walk.
Sheriff Bill Leeper and several deputies hit the streets on foot beginning at 5:30 p.m. to meet and greet residents, and listen to their concerns.
There was an overwhelmingly positive response to the sheriff’s visit. Sheriff Leeper said the event was a great opportunity for deputies to introduce themselves to residents and engage with them and listen to any concerns that they may have.
The number one concern residents relayed to the sheriff were traffic issues within the neighborhood like speeding and illegal parking. They also had concerns of some recent vehicle burglaries and/or people checking for unlocked vehicles parked in driveways late at night, which have been captured on security cameras.
Deputies will be following up to address those concerns to make sure our neighborhoods are as safe as possible.
The sheriff plans to hold the community walk event once a month in different neighborhoods throughout the county.
