October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an annual designation observed in October. The observance serves to educate communities, individuals, couples and families about Family Advocacy Program services and other community resources that can help prevent, raise awareness of community responsibility and resources for addressing domestic abuse.

Micah’s Place is the only certified Domestic Violence Center serving Nassau County.  Their mission is to provide prevention and intervention services to victims of domestic violence and to provide education within our community to effect change in behavior and attitudes relating to domestic violence.

“Domestic Violence continues to be an issue in our community, in all kinds of families and relationships,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper.  “During 2017, our agency responded to 371 incidences of domestic violence involving rape, fondling, aggravated assault, aggravated stalking, simple assault, and threats/intimidation.”

Micah’s Place is there to help 24 hours a day and seven days a week.  In case of an emergency dial 9-1-1.  If you need a place to go, if you need referrals to other agencies, or if you just need to talk call their 24-hour crisis hotline at 904-225-9979.  If you would like to donate items or host a fundraiser please call 904-491-6364 or visit their website at www.micahsplace.org.
