Beware of Facebook Lottery Scam
Yulee, Fla. – The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be aware of a lottery scam hitting the popular social media site: Facebook. The scam is through the chat function on the site as someone could be posing as your friend on Facebook.
Here’s how the scam works:
- Someone who is posing as your friend starts to chat with you
- They tell you Facebook is awarding cash through a lottery being held
- They give you a site to visit. One example is: facebook.com/agentjames.john5
- The friend writes back and tells you that you’ve won
- They then ask you for your name, address, number, email and age.
In some cases, the friend will ask for your credit card numbers and bank information.
“We are asking people who frequently chat with friends on Facebook to watch out for this latest scam” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
