May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Yulee, Fla. – The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind motorists and motorcyclists alike during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to “share the road” in order to help prevent motorcycle crashes, deaths and injuries on our roads. Motorcyclists will be out in force as the weather gets warmer, which is why May is the perfect time for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

“All road users need to share the responsibility of keeping the roadways safe” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “By following road signs, obeying speed limits, and always staying focused on the road, deaths and injuries could be prevented.”

Safety tips to drivers:

  • Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane width; never try to share a lane.
  • Be on the lookout for motorcyclists.
  • Check for motorcycles by looking in your mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections.
  • Do not tailgate. Allow more following distance when following a motorcycle, so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency.
  • Don’t drive distracted.
  • Drive sober.

Tips for motorcyclists:

  • Be alert—drowsy driving can impair your ability to react.
  • Drive sober.
  • Inspect your motorcycle before each ride.
  • Know the local traffic laws and rules of the road and obey them.
  • Make sure you can be seen; wear bright clothing to increase visibility.
  • Plan your route in advance and coordinate it with the other riders when riding in a group.
  • Wear appropriate gear.
