Nassau County, FL – The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) recently received handwritten thank you cards from Boy Scouts of America Troop 4545, based in Sebastian, FL, in appreciation for deputies’ swift and compassionate response to a disabled Amtrak train earlier this month.
On July 7, the train—carrying 219 passengers, including members of Troop 4545—broke down on the tracks in Nassau County amid extreme summer temperatures reaching 107 degrees.
NCSO deputies responded immediately, providing assistance to those in need. Passengers requiring medical attention were transported to deputies’ air-conditioned patrol vehicles, while others received snacks and water to stay hydrated and safe during the delay.
Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) also played a vital role, coordinating with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) to deploy buses that safely transported all passengers to the Jacksonville Amtrak Station.
“These deputies went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure these passengers were cared for in a rapidly developing situation,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “Their dedication and professionalism went beyond the expected standard, and I thank each of them for their continued service.”
In recognition of their exceptional efforts, the following deputies were presented with the department’s ABCD (Above & Beyond the Call of Duty) Award:
