During the weekend of Friday, April 17th through Sunday, April 19th, Nassau County experienced a major wildfire event along Conner Nelson Rd. and Bay Rd. in west Hilliard. The fire consumed over 500 acres of woodland in the area.
A strong, coordinated response by Nassau County Fire Rescue Department (NCFRD), the Florida Forest Service, and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) successfully brought the fire under control with no loss of life. NCSO personnel provided critical traffic control, evacuation guidance, road closures, and security for evacuated properties. Off-duty personnel were called in to support firefighting efforts, willingly giving up their time off so that regular operations could continue without interruption.
Amazingly, within hours, residents of Hilliard and the Ballpark Association organized a strictly volunteer effort, donating food, warm prepared meals, and beverages to the firefighters and responders working in the heat. This incredible outpouring of community support was deeply appreciated.
