Fernandina Beach, FL – The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two Fernandina Beach parents following the death of their 5-month-old child and the discovery of fentanyl and drug paraphernalia in their home.
On Thursday, June 19, deputies responded to a residence on South 6th Street for a cardiac emergency involving an unresponsive infant. While en route, deputies were informed that the child had been pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
Upon arriving at the home, investigators discovered a powdery substance on a baby crib tray, consistent with narcotic use, along with additional drug paraphernalia throughout the residence. A further search revealed a pouch containing a purple substance in Melissa Sue Irons’ bedroom drawer, which tested positive for fentanyl. A bag found in Scott Alan Irons’ wallet also tested positive for fentanyl.
Melissa Irons, 35, and Scott Irons, 34, were both arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance. They were booked into the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center. Melissa Irons’ bond was set at $15,000, and Scott Irons’ bond at $25,000.
Additional charges are possible pending the results of the child’s autopsy.
