Today, the Nassau County Sheriff's Office gathered with members of our community to remember September 11, 2001, a day that changed our nation forever.

We remembered the lives lost, honored the first responders who ran toward danger, reflected on the unity that followed, and renewed our promise to never forget.

As we look toward the next generation of first responders, we are reminded that the commitment to serve others continues.

𝟐𝟓 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏, 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟏

Twenty-five years ago, Detective Carlos Peralta was a young man living in Brooklyn, New York, when the events of September 11, 2001, changed the country forever.
Peralta vividly remembers where he was that morning and the confusion that quickly swept across New York City.
He remembers speaking with his mother, who was on her way out to run errands, before a large explosion and the sound of chaos changed the course of the day.
At first, there was confusion. Then came the realization: New York was under attack.
Peralta remembers watching first responders rush toward the devastation as others were trying to escape it. Amid the uncertainty, fear and destruction, he witnessed something that stayed with him — the courage and dedication of the men and women running toward danger to help others.
That moment left a lasting impression on him.
Seeing those first responders answer the call during one of the darkest days in our nation's history helped inspire Peralta to pursue a career in law enforcement. He eventually joined the New York City Police Department, carrying with him the example of the bravery he witnessed that day. Years later, his career brought him to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, where he continues to serve his community.
For Detective Peralta, September 11 is more than a date in history. It is a memory he carries with him — of his hometown, his family, the chaos of that morning and the first responders who demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable danger.
As we mark 25 years since September 11, 2001, Peralta also emphasizes the importance of ensuring younger generations understand what happened that day. Many young people today were not yet born when the attacks occurred. They may know September 11 as a date in a history book, but for those who lived through it, it was a day that changed lives forever.
Nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes.
Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.
One plane struck the Pentagon near Washington, D.C.
United Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers bravely fought back against the hijackers.
Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives.
Twenty-five years later, we remember them.
We remember the families who lost loved ones, the first responders who ran toward the danger, and the countless Americans who came together in the aftermath.
And we remember — so that those who were not yet here on September 11, 2001, will understand why we must never forget. ...

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, we gather to remember the lives lost, honor the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, and reflect on the courage, compassion and unity that emerged from one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office invites our community to join us for a 25th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony.

The ceremony will feature remarks from Sheriff Bill Leeper and Nassau County Fire Chief Brady Rigdon, along with a 21-gun salute and moment of silence honoring those we lost.

We teach the next generation.
We will never forget.
